Celebrating International Day of the Girl Child
Friday, October 11, 2024
Every year on 11 October, the world comes together to recognise the International Day of the Girl Child. This important day highlights the unique challenges faced by girls worldwide while advocating for their empowerment, education, and leadership. In 2024, the theme, ‘Girls’ vision for the future’, encourages us to take action that ensures girls can realise their full potential to bring a brighter future to fruition.
At RightBrains, we are deeply committed to empowering women in digital technology. The tech industry is fast-paced, and its future depends on diversity, innovation, and inclusion. Despite advances, the digital technology space remains male-dominated, and this imbalance starts early - girls are often underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, leading to fewer women in tech roles.
The importance of early empowerment
Investing in girls’ education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of gender inequality. Studies show that when girls are encouraged to pursue STEM subjects and are exposed to role models in tech, they are more likely to envision themselves in leadership roles within these fields. However, education alone is not enough; creating a culture that values and fosters digital literacy, critical thinking, and creativity is essential.
RightBrains’ role in promoting female leadership in tech
In line with this year’s theme, 'Girls’ vision for the future,' RightBrains actively invests in fostering leadership among women in tech through our educational programmes. By empowering women to thrive in digital technology, we enable them to become visible role models who can inspire the next generation. We also hope to change the face of female leadership and talent in digital technology by celebrating and featuring the incredible industry role models within our local IT industry. Through mentoring, role models can encourage younger generations to pursue STEM fields, helping them realise their potential and become the leaders they are meant to be. This creates a positive cycle of empowerment that drives lasting change across generations.
We understand the barriers girls face when entering the tech industry, from gender stereotypes to a lack of representation. Our mission is to challenge these barriers head-on by creating a more inclusive environment where women can thrive.
Our Digital Talent Programme is designed to help young women in digital technology sharpen their tech skills, build confidence, and connect with like-minded professionals who can guide and inspire them. We encourage our community to invest in the next generation by providing role models, mentorship, and opportunities that can transform their career trajectories.
In addition, the RightBrains Digital Leadership Programme focuses on equipping women with the skills and knowledge needed to take on leadership roles in the tech industry. This programme offers workshops, networking opportunities, and access to industry peers, ensuring that participants are well-prepared to influence and inspire others. By fostering a new generation of female leaders, we aim to create a more balanced and innovative tech landscape.
Closing the gender gap in tech
It is essential that we, as a society, provide girls with equal access to opportunities in technology, where their creativity and perspectives are greatly needed. The future of innovation depends on diverse voices, and the inclusion of more women in technology will ultimately lead to better products, solutions, and a more equitable digital world.
