Industry report explores the state of gender diversity in the fibre industry

In collaboration with Eurofiber, partner of RightBrains, this article highlights the latest research on (gender) diversity in the fibre industry and how sector initiatives are helping to create more inclusive workplaces.

The fibre industry is at the heart of Europe’s digital transformation, delivering the infrastructure that powers everything from high-speed internet to innovative digital services. As the sector grows, gender diversity and inclusion remains an important issue. Some illuminating statistics were recently published in the Diversity in Fibre 2024/2025 Report, published by the FTTH Council Europe’s DE&I Committee. The committee surveyed companies across the sector to highlight discrepancies and identify actionable insights for improvement.

Understanding the gender gap in fibre: report snapshots

Key findings in the report reveal that while female representation in senior roles has improved modestly compared to previous years, disparities remain significant. For every 100 senior male executives, there are only 90 women. Although this indicates progress, there is no parity as of yet. Perceptions of career advancement fairness differ sharply: 70% of men believe opportunities are equal, compared to just 52% of women.

Other dimensions of diversity, such as age, ethnicity, and ability, also remain underrepresented, particularly at leadership and board levels. These gaps highlight structural challenges in recruitment, retention, and career development pathways for women within the sector. Many women leave mid-career due to competing life priorities, while the overall pipeline from STEM fields remains limited.

The survey findings include developing a speak-up culture, sharing diversity and promotion data to help employees understand organisational efforts and progress, and ensuring equal promotional opportunities by conducting regular pay and career audits to identify and correct disparities. Looking towards a gender diverse future in fibre

Beyond individual company initiatives, collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the sector are essential. In a recent thought leadership article titled ‘Women in Fibre breaking the glass ceiling, Barbara Tonarelli (Adtran and chair of DE&I Committee FTTH Council) and Esra Buke (Eurofiber and member of DE&I Committee FTTH Council) write: “A lot of work still needs to be done, but open communication across the industry can further catalyse the positive transformation needed for a more inclusive future.”

The FTTH Council’s DE&I committee itself works to advance this goal through research, publications, and other initiatives such as ‘Women in fibre’ video campaign, to raise awareness for (gender) diversity challenges in the sector.

Conclusion

By sharing these insights, we aim to highlight both the challenges and the progress underway, inspiring companies and professionals across the fibre and broader digital technology sectors to advance gender diversity and inclusion.
