Creating your personal leadership blueprint

Monday, October 5, 2026

There are moments in our careers when we know something is shifting, even before we can fully articulate what it is.

Perhaps you have reached a level of leadership that you once worked very hard to achieve, and yet, rather than feeling satisfied, you find yourself wondering what comes next.

Perhaps you have been carrying a great deal of responsibility for a long time, and somewhere beneath the meetings, decisions and expectations, there is a quieter question asking whether the way you are working and leading still feels right for you.

Or perhaps nothing is particularly wrong at all. You are doing well. You are respected. You are capable. And still, you sense that there is another chapter waiting for you.

These moments are easy to overlook because our working lives rarely give us much encouragement to pause and listen to them.

We are often taught to keep moving. To set the next goal, take on the next challenge, prove that we are ready for more and continue climbing. There is always another position to pursue, another capability to develop, another milestone to reach.

But sometimes the most important work we can do for our careers is to step away from the momentum long enough to ask ourselves a different set of questions.

  • Where am I now?
  • What have I learned about myself as a leader?
  • What do I want from the next chapter of my career?
  • And perhaps most importantly: what might need to change in me, around me or about the way I lead in order for that next chapter to become possible?

This is where the idea of a Personal Leadership Blueprint begins.

Your career is more than a series of achievements

When we look back at our careers, it is tempting to measure them through the things we have accomplished: the roles we have held, the teams we have led, the projects we have delivered, the promotions we have received and the problems we have solved.

And those achievements matter.

But leadership is also shaped by the person behind them.

It is shaped by how you make decisions when the answer isn't obvious, how you respond when things become difficult, how comfortable you are taking up space, how you navigate relationships and influence, what gives you energy and what quietly depletes it.

It is shaped by the beliefs you hold about what it means to be successful, by the expectations you place upon yourself and by the parts of yourself you have perhaps learned to leave at the door in order to succeed.

Over time, these things become part of the way we lead.

And sometimes, without realising it, we continue leading from a version of ourselves that was perfectly suited to an earlier chapter.

The challenge is that the next chapter may ask something different of us.

It may require more visibility, greater strategic influence, stronger boundaries, a different relationship with ambition, or simply the courage to admit that what we once wanted is no longer what we want now.

That is not failure.

It is part of growing.

What if you could step back and see yourself more clearly?

A Personal Leadership Blueprint creates space for precisely this kind of reflection.

It is an opportunity to step outside the rhythm of everyday work and look at your leadership with fresh eyes; not through the expectations of your organisation or the responsibilities of your current role, but through the wider lens of the person and leader you are becoming.

It begins with understanding where you are today.

  • What are you doing particularly well?
  • Where do you feel most alive and effective?
  • Where might you be overextending yourself?
  • What patterns have helped you succeed, and which of those patterns might now be asking to evolve?

And then, from that place of greater awareness, we can begin to look forward.

Not simply towards another title or another achievement, but towards the kind of leadership and working life you genuinely want to create.

Because career progression is not always about moving upwards.

Sometimes it is about moving towards something that feels more meaningful.

Sometimes it is about stepping into greater responsibility.

Sometimes it is about changing direction entirely.

And sometimes it is about finding a way to lead with greater authority and confidence without sacrificing the parts of yourself that matter most.

From reflection to something you can actually carry forward

One of the reasons I believe this kind of personal work matters is that insight on its own can be beautiful, but insight becomes much more powerful when we know what to do with it.

The Personal Leadership Blueprint is therefore not intended to be another exercise that sits in a notebook after a retreat and is forgotten a few weeks later.

It is designed to give you something you can return to.

  • A clearer understanding of your strengths and opportunities.
  • A sense of where you want to direct your energy.
  • A clearer picture of the conversations, relationships and experiences that may support your next stage.
  • A set of intentions and actions that can begin to bring that next chapter into your everyday working life.

The value of having a confidential one-to-one conversation alongside this process is that your leadership journey is uniquely yours.

There are things we may be willing to explore differently in a private session than we would in a room with colleagues or peers.

Perhaps there is a career decision you have been sitting with.

Perhaps you know you are ready for more but are not quite sure how to position yourself for it.

Perhaps you are questioning whether the path you have been following is still the path you want.

Or perhaps you simply want someone outside your organisation to help you see what you may not be able to see when you are too close to it.

Sometimes a fresh perspective is enough to change the quality of a decision.

This is why we created RESET & RISE

The idea behind the RightBrains Reset & Rise Leadership Retreat is that meaningful leadership development needs space.

Space away from the demands of the everyday. Space to breathe, reflect and reconnect with yourself. Space to remember that you are a whole person, not simply the role you occupy or the responsibilities you carry.

Reset is an invitation to pause and take stock of where you are. Not because something is necessarily wrong, but because it is difficult to see clearly when you are constantly moving.

And Rise is about what becomes possible when you return to yourself with greater clarity.

What do you want to carry forward? What do you want to leave behind? What might you be ready to step into?

Your Personal Leadership Blueprint is an extension of that journey.

It takes the reflection created during the retreat and gives you the opportunity to make it personal; to look specifically at your own leadership, your career and the chapter that is asking to be written next.

Because ultimately, the purpose of stepping away is not simply to feel refreshed. It is to return differently. With a little more clarity about what matters. A little more confidence in what you know. A little more honesty about what you want. And perhaps a clearer sense of the direction in which you are ready to move.

Your next chapter does not need to be figured out all at once

I have come to believe that some of the most important career decisions are not made in moments of certainty.

They emerge slowly, through reflection, conversation and giving ourselves enough space to hear what we already know somewhere within us.

You may not leave a retreat knowing exactly where you will be in three years.

You may not have every step mapped out. And you don't need to.

What matters is having enough clarity to recognise the next meaningful step, and enough self-awareness to understand the leader you need to be as you take it.

Your career is not simply a sequence of achievements.

It is an evolving expression of who you are, what you value and what you are willing to grow into.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for your leadership is to stop for a moment and listen.

Not to find a perfect plan.

But to hear what your next chapter is asking of you.

And then, from that place, begin to build your own Personal Leadership Blueprint.
