The future of transportation

Kimberley Sommer is bursting with ideas. The creator of Gaea-Systems and Hera-Systems designs ‘Brexit software’ that helps simplify imports and exports between England and the Netherlands and dreams of one day creating a global transportation system.

Motivated by a desire to make a difference in society, Kimberley believes you can be part of the change even when working on projects from your bedroom. As a child, Kimberley learned a lot about technology from her brother. “I learned from his ideas and then created my own solutions,” she says. “It’s very beautiful to see something come together.

“I’ve been born with this gift. I want to explore my talents, see what other talents I have and how far it can reach,” Kimberley says. She says that if someone takes an interest in something and they have the talents required to make a difference, the only thing they need is an appetite for risk. “When you trust yourself and take a risk, you will excel.”

Her end goal is teleportation. “I want to create a zero point in transport,” she says and adds that she ultimately wants to know whether we can “force nature to a point where everything is just a formula.”

A lot can be achieved with mathematics and technology, she says. “Mathematics and technology are related to each other. With math, you can create another dimension and with computer science, you can bring change to a society based on a formula.”

Shaping the future

For women looking to pursue a career in a STEM field, Kimberley says: “Solutions are needed and so are you.”

If we want to build a better future for all, we need all the help we can get. “I think women can help make the world better,” she says. “We think on a different level and our nature is based on emotion. Men are rational figures.

“There are so many women with this talent,” she says. “We need to give women the trust they need.”
